PC and Mac: Softphones (X-ten Lite)
Softphones are programs that can be installed on a PC or Mac and allow you to use your computer as a telephone, through a headset with a microphone connected to your soundcard. Using your VOIP service, you can place phone calls to any landline or mobile phone in the world at our extremely low rates.
We will show the step-by-step setup only for X-Lite free softphone as it is the most widely used and deployed solution and it is also available on other platforms, such as Mac and Linux.
First, you need to download and install X-ten Lite. Please note that version 4, released February 2011, has significantly reduced functionality compared to version 3:
X-Ten Lite ver 4
X-Ten Lite ver 3
For X-Ten Lite version 4, click on the Softphone menu and choose Account Settings. Fill in your User_ID and Password and enter toronto.ezvoip.co in the Domain field. Enter for the Display name whatever you want to appear in Caller ID when you call somebody (outgoing calls). The number to dial for Voicemail is *97.
On the X-Ten Lite program version 3 (rs, tc), click on the MENU button (on the right of CLEAR and on the left of the green button) or right click somewhere on the phone.
Select System Settings, SIP Proxy, Default. And enter the following info:
Enabled: Yes
Display name: Your name (this will show on Caller ID display when calling)
Username: (from Voip.Wintegrated.com - MyServices) – Auth User as well
Password: from MyServices
Domain/Realm = SIP Proxy: toronto.ezvoip.co
Click the "domain" radio button in version 3
Please see the samples above.
Testing the Service
To test the service dial 4443 for an echo test, which is a service which tests the quality / latency of your connection.
Troubleshooting
If the phone fails to login, please take the time to double check your configuration as above.
If everything appears to be correct, the problem may be your firewall
If you are running Windows, try disabling the built in firewall.
If you have an external firewall try opening SIP ports
If everything else fails and your router / Firewall supports DMZ, try putting the machine with the softphone on the DMZ; only try this last
Ports:
SIP signalling port (UDP listen) = 5060 RTP/RTCP ports (UDP) = 8000 – 8001
RTP/RTCP port (UDP listen) = 10000 - 30000 (depending on your sip phone)
Several other options are discussed and compared in the ConsumedConsumer's intro to VOIP guide.
